Both the ANU4 and CAMSISOZ scales use a collapsed version of ASCO Second Edition, developed to meet the confidentiality requirements of the Australian Bureau of Statistics in preparing data tabulations from the 1996 Census. Two data tables, one dealing with asepcts of the labour market and the other with aspects of the marriage market, were commissioned by the authors (F.L. Jones and Julie McMillan) in order to construct these new scales. In collapsing ASCO-2 codes, we were guided by two general principles: (1) we sought to develop aggregated codes that contained as close to one per cent of the Australian labour force as possible; and (2) we sought to minimise variation in the status scores of component codes (being guided in this process by their ANU3_2 scores).

Our collapsed version of the ASCO-2 scheme contains 117 distinct groups, 27 of which can be further divided by employment status (independent workers versus those on wages or salaries). A measure of our success in preserving the status information contained in the full ASCO-2 classification is given by the very high correlations (+0.99) across seven different occupations recorded in the Lifecourse Project, which were coded into both the full (340 4-digit groups) and the collapsed scheme (117 groups).
